Organization

The Voyager images are organized on a series of PDS volumes as follows:

  • VGISS_5xxx: Images from the Jupiter flybys
    • VGISS_5101 to VGISS_5120: Images from the Voyager 1 flyby
    • VGISS_5201 to VGISS_5214: Images from the Voyager 2 flyby
  • VGISS_6xxx: Images from the Saturn flybys
    • VGISS_6101 to VGISS_6121: Images from the Voyager 1 flyby
    • VGISS_6201 to VGISS_6215: Images from the Voyager 2 flyby

  • VGISS_7xxx: Images from the Voyager 2 flyby of Uranus

  • VGISS_8xxx: Images from the Voyager 2 flyby of Neptune

Within each sequence of volumes, images are stored in chronological order. Files are named by the seven-digit spacecraft clock (aka the “Flight Data System” or “FDS” count). See the table below for direct access to individual volumes. Note that the FDS counts have the following properties:

  • Voyager 1 at Jupiter: First digits are 14-17.
  • Voyager 2 at Jupiter: First digits are 18-20.
  • Voyager 1 at Saturn: First digits are 27-35.
  • Voyager 2 at Saturn: First digits are 38-44.
  • Voyager 2 at Uranus: First digits are 24-27.
  • Voyager 2 at Neptune: First digits are 08-12.

Data Files

Each Voyager image is stored at four processing levels, as indicated by a suffix:

  • *_RAW.IMG: The uncompressed, raw image.
  • *_CLEANED.IMG: The raw image with noise spikes and reseau markings suppressed.
  • *_CALIB.IMG: The image after dark current subtracted and conversion to units related to reflectivity.
  • *_GEOMA.IMG: The calibrated image with camera distortion removed.

For example, the file VGISS_5xxx/VGISS_5214/DATA/C20693XX/C2069302_RAW.IMG is the raw version of the Voyager 2 Jupiter image with FDS count 20693.02.

The images are all stored in VICAR format. Python users can read the data files using our “vicar” module.

Getting the Data You want

  • Use OPUS, our versatile search engine to find and retrieve specific Voyager ISS data products using a wide range of criteria.

    • Search results are provided with thumbnail images for each observation, and include options to download compressed raw images, thumbnail images, tables of associated metadata, and if available versions of the images in various stages of processing from uncompressed raw images through fully calibrated and geometrically corrected images. User selected data files can be bundled as zip files for easy downloading.

  • Use Viewmaster to explore the data volumes for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune.

    Viewmaster allows you to browse through the volumes, providing previews of images and access to observing details.

  • The table below provides direct access to the calibrated volumes and tar.gz files for each volume.

    • Clicking on the VOLUME_ID will take you to the root directory of the volume.

    • To download an entire volume, right click on that volume’s “Compressed Volume” link in the second column. The compressed volumes are provided in tar.gz format. For information on opening files of this type, click here.

    • Browse links go to directories of browse images at various sizes with additional links to the specific image at each processing stage and the associated label file for that image.

    • Clicking on INDEX.TAB will take you to the index file for that volume. The index file is a twenty one column, ASCII table listing each image on the volume along with some information extracted from that image’s label file. Descriptions of the columns can be found in the INDEX.LBL file in the INDEX subdirectory on each volume.
